I'm sure this is a sticky subject but I'm going to ask anyway. Is there a good rule of thumb to follow for how steep a slope can be crossed with a tractor (specifically a JD4300 4WD HST). I ask because I have a drainage swale in front of the property that I need to cut with my roatary cutter (bush hog). I can't back over the edge and cut because the cutter just hangs in the air behind the tractor so I need to cut it horizontaly.ScottC

This is a good article which I have read before. I have the same problem with jd4200, except my creek is sloped so I can back all the way down it. But it takes a lot of time this way. I've wondered about a statement in my manual that says something about you should not use 4 wheel drive on a steep slope because you could lose traction. (Ido'nt have manual with me right now so this may be wrong.) What does this mean? I bought 4wd for this very reason. ....

I just got my 4300 this last weekend and took some time during one of the downpores to read the manual. I read the same thing about 4WD on hills and did not understand it either. Unless, perhaps, having power on the front wheels and th efront end being a bit light going up hill, it can give the front end a kick up into the air. I would think if you had a bush hog on the back, it would stop you from going over backwards.Doug ....

The only dangerous effect I've experienced is a 4-wheel skid, which loses steering and can be very exciting. While it is possible to do the same thing on a 2WD machine, it is MUCH easier to do with 4WD. ....

I think that very same comment is in the manual for my 1981 750, for the 4wd version of it anyway. I believe the reason it is in their is to not give the operator a false sense of security. In other words, I think JD is saying just because you have 4wd and can climb a much steeper grade than a 2wd tractor doesn't mean that you should!! Oh yeah, don't ever think a bush hog will keep you from going over backwards!! Most are made to float a good bit anyway, and the lift design (ones without downpressure) may be such that the lift arms can be pushed up with enough force (as in a backwards rollover). ....

There is no rule of thumb. Use the thing between your ears. If it doesn't look or feel safe DON'T do it. Mow it by hand. ....
